Contemporary means ‘at the moment’ and it’s a style that is always evolving throughout the years. A design that is a mix of different aesthetics and features – it illustrates contemmporary trends, while paying homage to the past. In contemporary ambiances, you can see modern elements mixed, in a bold and elegant way, with art-deco or traditional design pieces.

“Unlike other styles that are usually devoted to a particular look, time, and spirit, contemporary style refers to the styles gaining traction today. When looking at contemporary interior design styles of today, you’ll notice neutral palettes, curved lines, and prominent minimalism”, claims Décor Aid.

Modern style comparing to contemporary design is much more complex, because it has many different incarnations. It refers to modern art movements in the interior design field. Influenced by Scandinavian and German architecture and interior design, modern style is quite simple. Modern ambiances have neutral and earthy colors, clean and straight lines and it doesn’t have a lot of details.

While in Contemporary Design we may see some hits of color, in modern style “the focus is placed on the use of monochromatic colors, and patternless fabrications set among whitewashed rooms”.
✔️ Modern and Contemporary designs are both minimal. Modern and contemporary ambiances have clean lines, neutral colors and a timeless elegance.
✔️ Open Space. Layering plenty of light through windowed walls and open spaces are both features of contemporary and mid-century modern styles. The oen floor plan is a architecture and interior design feature that aims to create a feeling of spaciousness. Usually, the kitchen merges with the living and dining room areas.
✔️ “Furnishings feature exposed legs. For both contemporary and modern style, furnishings like sofas, ottomans, and chairs tend to feature bare legs and slim bases. Both styles also highlight furnishings that boast reflective surfaces like exposed glass and metals. You’ll also find plenty of natural wooden materials in both contemporary and modern furniture, from end tables with a metal base to architectural beams and raw reclaimed wooden tabletops”
✔️ Modern ambiances have wooden and earthy elements, for example this set’s pieces were inspired by Nature elements and cultures of the world. The color concept is a neutral and earthy palette that maintains a clinical, modern interior design look. The materials usually used are wood, leather, brass and sometimes stone or concrete.
✔️ Modern décor is more functional than contemporary design. While contemporary enviroments are more focused on aesthetics, modern sets’ pieces tend to have a function. For example, the wall bookcase in order to have more storage in the room.
✔️ Contemporary Style is not as strict as modern design. Modern design follows a format of minimalism, while in contemporary style it’s possible to display design pieces of different aesthetics and it’s more eclectic.
❌ Modern Spaces are not cold or stark. Modern design is influenced by minimalism, however it doesn’t require cold hues such as contemporary style. “Contemporary interior design styles, on the other hand, have a bold starkness in them, such as monochromatic black and white, although it may also swing from one extreme to the other on the color wheel”.
✔️ Contemporary furniture designs are curvier. “Although modern design furniture favors straight and strong lines, the design concepts of contemporary furniture are more organic in silhouette. Contemporary designed furniture is usually a blend of comfort and sophistication with a fresh look and feel. Metals, such as nickel, stainless steel, and chrome are also popular among furniture pieces boasting a contemporary style concept”, claims Décor Aid.
✔️ Modern Design have earthier colors.
