Perfectly centered on New York’s east-west axis, the duplex takes in panoramic views from the East River to the Hudson and, on clear days, sightlines north all the way to Central Park. While the owners expressed a hankering for concrete floors, Gibson believed the surfaces needed more refinement. A gray-and-black-speckled terrazzo for the foyer and dining room satisfied their craving for an industrial edge while also adding polish and visual interest. She brought in textured upholstery and rugs, including a delicate 18th-century European tapestry for the main bedroom, and hand-stained oak paneling to help take off the minimalist chill.

Monique Gibson is the queen of creature comforts who else pours takeout coffee into proper ceramic cups when a visitor comes calling at her historic Italianate townhouse in Manhattan’s East Village? There’s a spread of food on the dining table, and she says in a down-home Virginia twang. Easygoing in effect but exacting in execution, this attention to detail is just a taste of the treatment Gibson, an AD100 interior designer, lavishes on her loyal clients, a list that includes Jon Bon Jovi, Meg Ryan, and Jon Stewart, who book meetings at the four-story brownstone building where she lives and works.

Island Retreat

This dazzling Island Retreat Project was made in a pleasant collaboration between Monique Gibson and the famous and talented music artist John Mellencamp. John envisioned a house that would serve as his creative retreat, a place to write music, play guitar, and paint. Without doing anything drastic, Monique began to tweak the architecture, raising the heights of the doors in the central hall and creating a series of metal and glass doors that provide glimpses into the adjoining spaces. On one side is the movie room, where a Hollywood classic is always showing.  Across the hall is the library, where we added a floor-to-ceiling bookcase to contain all the objects John collects, from pottery to sculpture and books.

Monique Gibson has always believed in including the whole family in the decorating process. The all-white space took on a new depth with the simple trick of staining the window surrounds a dark shade. Furniture and accessories in natural materials like walnut, linen, boiled wool, and cashmere made the neutral space feel grounded.

A well-designed home can be more than just a collection of beautifully furnished rooms. It can, and should, be a framework for a life well-lived, or a blueprint that can get you there. It was important to the client that her home’s color scheme be light and serene. Standing in the space, Monique would sometimes notice her gazing out at the sea and the sky. The view seemed to give her a sense of relief, even peace, from her stress, so she took inspiration from this natural palette, combining the whites and creams of passing cumulus clouds with the pale aqua and green of the Atlantic.
