We Are Huntly, the Best Emerging Interior Design Practice at this year’s Australian Interior Design Awards, redesigned a Richmond Residence giving it an industrial style. What was once a cooking school gained a new life!
Kylie Dorotic, the director of the company based in Melbourne, says “The most challenging part of this project? Finding the balance of everything. The existing bones were quite industrial,” Kylie says. “The fit-out was very ’80s, so our challenge was to make it a home, to make it feel warm, but to still respect the architecture.”
Before they started working on it they had several important parameters to follow. It needed to accommodate the client and his children; it was needed a place that allows the client to work from home; and it was necessary room for the client’s impressive art collection.
The designers attribute the project’s success to a rare combination of elements. “A great trusting client and an incredible space to work with – if you get one of those things in a project, it’s a great start; but when you get the two of them together, it’s amazing,” Alicia, co-director, says.
Suspended above the dining-room table, it is possible to see an elegant Cloud pendant lamp from the Criteria Collection. “It was our take on a contemporary chandelier, something sculptural and beautiful,” Kylie says. “It’s deliberately much softer, so that it creates a contrast.”
