Curiosity Studio was created by the French designer, Gwenael Nicolas, and it’s based in Tokyo, Japan. The design time believes that working on design gives you the same skills as traveling in time. Why? Because you constantly need to think ahead, and step to the future.
“The present and past are the inspiration, but the mind is projecting itself into a different dimension. It’s like a parallel world, where everything can be imagined and created”.
Actually, it’s a challenge to combine the three fields of design, because we’re talking about collaborations with companies and clients that are searching for new concepts of design, projects, new products and the development of new materials. “Design is not a monolithic activity but multi-task changing everyday. I feel I am doing a different job everyday, my work is about having an opinion about every subject and share that idea to achieve an effective result”, claims the designer.
Hospitality projects are the main type of work that the company does, and we can definitely see their fingerprint on it: “translucency, emotional coloring, and attractive forms”. Hotels have a lot of details to deal with, such as the colors of the flowers, the taste of the coffee, and every single detail matters! Curiosity Japan is curious enought to continue searching for new things that will surprise and inspire!
Several materials were developed years ago with companies, and the result only came a few weeks ago. Excelence definitely takes time! With projects spread worlwide, the comapny has the possibility to escape from their own culture. Freedom and freedom is one of the most important things when it comes to creation.
Something that is different about this design company is that they believe in humanity, balance and positive vibes! The future of design probably has the solution for the biggest issues of the world. Instead of complaining about the state that we’re dealing, Curiosity Japantells us to stay positive and have a pro-active approach.
“It is a constant search for new ideas, with an understanding of the context in which they create – social, economic, cultural. The way they develop projects is through continuous research and development of subjects and matters they have interest in. Sometimes it takes a month or even years”.
“Each project design is like a perfume with the first, the second and the third note. At first, the design seems cool and abstract, but when you interact with it, “surprise” something unexpected happens, a smile appears on your lips and finally the more you use it the more you feel attached to it”.
“The design world is stretched between fast history and slow history. We create very unique, fast to consume ideas and design, with the intend to create instant fame and trend, ready to move onto the next in a few days. On the other side, brands create long term identity, which is the most challenging, because you actually have to decide on the right timeless. Japan’s culture has always been actually based on a two-speed culture and it is interesting to see how it becomes mainstream. the question is not if old or new is better, but how the tension and dialogue between both is necessary.”
