Today we bring a very special project: The Hotel Van Zandt, by Zeff Riffs.
The soulful folk rock of the late John Townes Van Zandt has been an inspiration to artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Garth Brooks, and scores of other musicians in Van Zandt’s native Texas and beyond. His reach was recently extended to artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Garth Brooks, and scores of other musicians in Van Zandt’s native Texas and beyond. His reach was recently extended to design—in the shape of the Hotel Van Zandt, on the shore of Austin’s Lady Bird Lake.
There are some details that may go unnoticed to many but that contribute to improving the user’s experience, like the fact the hotel name appears stenciled on the entry’s white-oak floor. At first sight, it may seem like a random pattern but if you take a closer look, you’ll figure out what it really is. Some people don’t even notice the lettering on the floor because they’re so mesmerized looking up at the gorgeous Botti Chandelier.

The musical references are all over the hotel and it’s impossible not to get affected by the feeling of timelessness that surrounds you. The mirrors on the ceiling make the lounge room look much bigger and the Clark Suspension lamp brings an extra “wow” factor to the room. The warm colors are welcoming and make the user feel comfortable and at home!
Part of the Kimpton group, the Hotel aims for a cheeky sense of place and fun surprises, while still delivering on big-hotel-brand competence and consistency.
The dining area is marked by the same contemporary lighting style, with beautiful Matheny chandeliers lighting up the room.
The rooms follow the same line of decor, even though the music references are not so noticeable here. The 319 rooms and suites play it safe, with simple palettes of blue or bronze, Carrera marble bathrooms and up-to-date tech and amenities. The suites are more playful, with vinyl record players and interesting art.
The man responsible for this amazing work of art in the south-african Mark Zeff, founder and owner of MARKZEFF, a design-consulting firm based in New York City.
