It’s impossible to dissociate life and color. Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. It can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions. The predictions run the gamut from soft neutrals to statement-making jewel tones to moody hues. No matter what your color of choice is, one thing is for sure: color trends for the next decade are all yearning for a sense of calm.
“To understand what is coming, we need to understand where we are”, Dr Bertilsson
Dr Karl, a color specialist, believes that we need to analyze the past, and, specially, the present to predict what is coming. The NCS Color Trend Talk during IMM Cologne 2019, explored the Interior Color Trends for the upcoming years. It is the opportunity to understand which factors are driving the color directions for 2020+.
EVOLVING ECLECTICISM
The first trend, evolving eclecticism, is about choosing neutral colors, however adding always a bright color to pop. Orange, medium pink and pale blue will be the top chosen ones. A colorful place attracts more people, and usually, they feel safer rather then in a neutral color room. The interesting thing is that people are more motivated when seeing bright colors, but when taking decisions, for example, the colors to use on their home décor, they usually go for neutral colors.

SHADES OF INCOGNITO
2020+ marks the beginning to a new conscious world. Design is seen as a tool to solve the major issues of the planet. Global warmth has changed the temperature worldwide, so we can expect some pale and cold colors, such as soft grey, white and natural materials, such as marble, wood and recycled materials, to remind us that we need to think twice about what is happening.

Contemporary design is one of the main trends of the year. An aesthetic that is always evolving, since its name means ‘at the moment’. Currently, this particular style can be defined as minimalistic with clean lines and a neutral color palette with different shades of grey. Insider tip: add different textures and materials to create contrast and depth, and check how all-neutral doesn’t necessarily have to be boring and plain.

“I do think warmer tones will start to outpace the greys. I think brown is going to be fashionable again, just because it’s warm and classic. It reminds us of things that have been around forever which is comforting, like silver and gold.”—Liz Caan, principal of Liz Caan & Co.

“We’re noticing an increased interest in deeper, richer colors such as deep ambers, greens, and carnelian red, along with softer textures and more pattern, which we expect to emerge as strong trends in 2021.We also expect to see a return to layered patterns and color in the new year, as well as more embellishment. Design will become more detail oriented and embellished in 2021, and we’ll see luxury in little pieces making big statements. For example, embroidery in sparring detail and embellishments on fabrics and even wallpaper.”—Stacy Waggoner, founder of Studio Four NYC
